About H2H Cooperative
We are about to see an unprecedented transfer of wealth in the United States. As Baby Boomers retire over the next 10-20 years, hundreds of millions of acres -- particularly of agricultural and pastureland -- will be put on the market, with a high probability that corporate land grabs will take the lion’s share. We have a narrow window in which to implement an alternative to ensure equitable and affordable land access and ecological stewardship in the long-term. Among other things, this will require money.
H2H Cooperative will tap into the wealth of local communities by building a large membership base of people who care about the future of land and the livelihoods of farmers.
H2H Cooperative will prioritize a particular source of funding that is relatively untapped by economic justice and land conservation movements: dollars that would otherwise be spent on funerals. According to the Federal Trade Commission, after a home and a car, a funeral is the third largest purchase that most people make. Every year, more than $20 billion is paid into the funeral industry. Currently, these funds are supporting unsustainable practices (high carbon and toxin emissions from cremation, resource and water waste by cemeteries) and lining the pockets of the wealthy, as the funeral industry has become increasingly centralized under the ownership of large corporations. The number of annual deaths per year is expected to rise by 35% in the next 20 years, and -- of even greater relevance -- we will ALL eventually die. We have the chance to spend our dollars in ways that generate vitality while we are still alive and that will leave behind a powerful legacy of economic and environmental justice. In other words, we are channeling what we would normally have invested in death, and investing it in life.
Instead of spending thousands of dollars on conventional funeral products and services, Cooperative members can pool those funds with others to finance and/or purchase land that can then be used for the quadruple purpose of:
Enabling good livelihoods for farmers by creating affordable farm and pastureland,
Creating retreat and community gathering spaces, and
Natural burials for ourselves and loved ones,
Each member will enjoy multiple benefits during their lifetimes, including the opportunity to invest personal assets into more sustainable investments, access to Cooperative land for gatherings, hiking, and retreats, and collective power to alter the future of land ownership in the US.
By cultivating new possibilities and expectations for both life and death, the H2H Cooperative and other organizations like it could channel hundreds of billions of dollars into the purchase of land across the country within the next 20 years.
